Earth Day underwater cleanup
Volunteers from Tacoma's scuba community have joined forces to clean up the environment on Earth Day. The cleanup takes place at the Point Defiance Boathouse in Tacoma. The cleanup removed 810 pounds worth of trash from the waters last year. This cleanup continues to help marine life and conserve the environment. It's a great way of promoting your business and meeting other people who enjoy diving.
Organisers have planned to have kayakers and scuba diver teams work together to take away fishing gear from Tacoma's waterfront. Divers will then lift the net from the water by using a boatlift. Some participants will be able to work with Wounded Warriors to remove large pieces of trash and other waste. The cleanup is planned to preserve the water and provide an unforgettable experience for the community.

Rockfish survey
Participating in a Tacoma SCUBA community-based rockfish survey can help to save endangered rockfish species. This dive is part a citizen science collaboration between Harbor WildWatch and the NOAA. Participation in the survey is open to all divers, with no experience required. The dive brief is where the training takes place. Participation in night dives requires certification.
WDFW began a multi-year mark-recapture study near Westport, Washington, in 1998. This monitoring system, which includes five annual releases for black rockfish, is part of a sport fishery tag recovery monitoring system. These fish were released from pinnacles that were fished by Westport charter fishing boats. This survey involves the placing of two wire tags in the opercular muculature of these fish in order for them to be identified after capture.
Easy exit with just pounds of trash
You can go scuba diving near Commencement Bay if you are looking for a spot in the Greater Tacoma area. This Earth Day, 47 pounds of trash was collected by volunteers from the water by scuba divers. Octopuses, fishing lines, and glass bottles were among the garbage. The Marine Science and Technology Center (MaST), a part of Highline Community College organized the clean up. A previous MaST cleanup removed hundreds of pounds of trash from the waters around Des Moines.
Observation: Bull sea lion wounded
Tacoma's dive group witnessed an amazing sight while scubadiving. The sight of a bull sealion injured by an arrow stunned divers. According to reports, the shark bite had left the animal blind and had left a scar. Bjorn was then taken to the Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles, where rescuers helped him gain weight. Bjorn is the name of the sea lion, named after a character from "Vikings". This mighty creature is almost 400 pounds in weight and is currently residing at Tacoma Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

In October, a Tacoma diving group saw this amazing sight. The group was astonished to see a sea lion in action for the first time. Observations show the playful nature of the sea lions. Sea lion pups tend to gather in groups of similar age, and will play with divers in the water. They also enjoy playing with divers, jumping in the water and giving them toys as well as interacting with bubble stream.
